For the Mountain Bike Enthusiast

· South Africa's best mountain bike trails ·

When you combine South Africa's largest indigenous forests with dramatic Outiniqua Mountains add spectacular Indian ocean views and hard working Sanparks foresters you have 6 of the finest, well marked, MTB trails in the country.

The four Harkerville trails*.
Take the N2 road east out of Knysna - direction Plettenberg Bay - after +- 20km you will find the Garden-of-Eden kiosk where you can park, obtain riding permits and route maps (+- R25.00)
Yellow Route - 14 km - follows Jeep tracks - not technical
Blue Route - 12 km - single track and Jeep track  - not technical
Green Route - 15 km - starts with Jeep track and finishes on single track through lush forest section - semi-technical
Red Route - 24 km Believed to be the most scenically diverse MTB trail in SA (some say world-wide) combines the best forest single tracks, near cliff-edge sea views and lush fern lined deep wooded sections. Some technical sections.

Petrus-se-Brand route (North-South direction)
Take the N2 east out of Knysna - at the top of the hill leaving Knysna immediatly take the Uniondale R339 road on your left - heading north (at informal settlement) after a few km the tar road becomes gravel - after about 18-20kn look out for Diepwalle Forestry sign - the road splits - take the right fork to the station where you can obtain a permit and start the ride.

24 km Forest Jeep track with a short high speed technical single track section near the end (this can be by-passed if you wish)
North-south riding gives you the advantage of the fall in elevation.
The route starts at the forestry office parking and ends at the Garden-of-Eden N2
(The route can be ridden south-north but the south start point is not marked and you need to be careful as the route markers are arranged for North South riding)

Homtini Route
Take the N2 west - direction George/Cape Town - Take the Rheenendal road (off N2) on your right after leaving the bridge over the Knysna River (lagoon)
Look out for the Libbies Hoek/Jublee Creek/Milwood turn-off - follow that road until you get to the forestry hut at the entrance where you get a permit - continue up to Krisjan se Nek picnic spot parking and start of circular trail
Note there are beautiful picnic spots at Jublee Creek - a few km from the trail start - 19km circular forest train mainly Jeep track to start (long steep climb +- 6km after start) then very scenic views and great forest trail to finish
